Lehrstuhl für Pflanzenzüchtung

Research Assistant

The Plant Breeding Institute of the Christian-Albrechts University of Kiel, Germany, currently offers one position for a

Research assistant

for 7 month, planned start March 2018 with the research topic “Unravelling a genetic network for bolting time regulation in Beta species to breed winter sugar beet”. The salary is based on the German public pay scale (TV-L 13, 38,7 hours per week).

The position in the project is funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) as part of the priority program “Flowering time control: from natural variation to crop improvement”.

Area of Activity:

The regulation of bolting time is of upmost importance in sugar beet production. In the past years, we have identified the major genes controlling the onset of bolting. In this project we aim to unravel the function of two major genes on the genetic and on the protein level. This project runs in close collaboration with partners at the University of Marburg.

Tasks and Areas of Responsibility:

The successful applicant will:

  • Perform genetic studies in segregating populations
  • Genotype plants with molecular markers and calculate recombination frequencies
  • Measure the transcriptional activities by RT-qPCR
  • Update a seed database with recent information of this project
  • Write a manuscript and a final report of this project

You should have:

  • An excellent doctoral degree in agriculture or biology (or a comparable subject),
  • Excellent background in genetics, mapping and plant molecular biology
  • Sound laboratory experience: DNA and RNA isolation, PCR, quantitative Real-Time PCR, plasmid cloning, linkage mapping, plant genomics or plant transformation.
  • Previous experience of fieldwork and plant phenotyping
  • Basic bioinformatics skills to analyze plant genomes
  • Excellent command of the English language, both written and spoken,
  • Sound experience in MS Office applications (word, excel, power point)
  • Cooperativeness, i.e., ability to work in a team,
  • Independence and commitment

What we offer:

  • A challenging and interesting research position with the possibility to shape your own research profile,
  • More information on the research done in the working group and current research projects can be found in the internet https://www.plantbreeding.uni-kiel.de/en
