Lehrstuhl für Pflanzenzüchtung

Research Assistant "NEMARES"

The Plant Breeding Institute of the Christian-Albrechts University of Kiel, Germany, currently offers one position for a

Research assistant (at the doctoral dissertation level)

till September, 30, 2020 with the research topic “Importance of root lesion nematodes in German crop production and strategies to breed resistant varieties (NEMARES)”. The salary is based on the German public pay scale (TV-L 13, half-time employment, 19,35 hours per week).

The position in the project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as part of the program „Pflanzenzüchtungsforschung für die Bioökonomie“.

Area of Activity:

Cereals belong to the most important source of calories for humans and root lesion nematodes (RLN) are important pests worldwide with a large range of host species. These migratory parasites are able to infest a wide spectrum of crops. In the past decade, severe damage in German cereal production has been reported and this pest is regarded by farming experts as a major threat for cereal production. In this project, the applicant will identify resistance gene(s) against RLN to be used in plant breeding in a near future.

Tasks and Areas of Responsibility:

In collaboration with the project partners, the successful applicant will:

  • Phenotype a collection of barley lines according to their resistance level against RLN
  • Perform QTL and Association analysis
  • Identify RLN resistance genes candidates
  • Clone and functional analyze resistance genes candidates

Qualifications:

You should have:

  • An excellent master’s degree in agriculture (or a comparable subject),
  • Excellent background in genetics, mapping and plant molecular biology
  • Sound laboratory experience: DNA and RNA isolation, PCR, quantitative Real-Time PCR, cloning, plant transformation.
  • Previous experience of fieldwork and plant phenotyping
  • Experience in genome wide association studies (GWAS) and QTL analyses is desirable but not a prerequisite
  • Excellent command of the English language, both written and spoken,
  • Sound experience in MS Office applications (word, excel, power point)
  • Cooperativeness, i.e., ability to work in a team,
  • Independence and commitment

What we offer:

  • A challenging and interesting research position with the possibility to shape your own research profile,
  • A sound academic supervision of the dissertation work,
  • More information on the research done in the working group and current research projects can be found in the internet https://www.plantbreeding.uni-kiel.de/en
